Real Football 2010 v1.0
With World Cup fever about to grip the entire planet there really hasn’t been a better time to download a soccer-related game to your Android phone. The trouble is that the platform has been starved of a digital decent kick about almost since day one. Thankfully Gameloft has stepped up to the challenge by porting over its popular Real Football 2010 title from Apple’s iPhone.
A veteran of mobile gaming for some time, the Real Football franchise is seen by many as the only “premier league” option for portable footy fanatics. Almost from the moment you boot up the game it’s clear why this is the case – the presentation and sheer range of options is incredible, putting Real Football 2010 on par with most fully-fledged home console representations of the sport.
The usual exhibition and training modes are available but Real Football 2010 also boasts a full season component where you can pick a club side and lead them to glory throughout an entire campaign. Not only do you control the action on the pitch but you also take care of the day-to-day organisation of the club, making this a lot like the classic “Player Manager” titles of old.
There’s even the option to take your skills online and play against other people in the Real Football League, which is essentially a leader board that ranks the best players in the world.
Of course with the 2010 World Cup about to start there’s the obligatory Cup mode which allows you to replicate the thrills and spills of the planet’s biggest sporting spectacle. To round things off there’s the awkwardly-named “Enter the Legend” mode, which is a clone of similar modes seen in EA’s FIFA and Konami’s Pro Evo Soccer. Here you only control one player as opposed to the entire team, and it’s your job to guide your digital avatar to fame and glory.
As if all this wasn’t enough you can also tinker around with the game’s comprehensive Editor mode. This allows you to effectively create your own team and re-name certain players. From here you can also connect to Gameloft’s database to download the latest team rosters. Although Real Football 2010 doesn’t feature actual club sides (Manchester United are Manchester Red, for example) it does boast authentic player names.
After such an overwhelming collection of modes and options, actually getting into the game mode itself feels like something of an anticlimax. The visuals are seriously impressive, and like Gameloft’s other Android titles Real Football 2010 proves what a yawning gap there is between the developer’s output and that of its rivals.
Considering the limitations of a touchscreen interface the controls manage to hold up pretty well – players are commanded using a virtual D-pad and the interface is kept to a minimum by only using two buttons: one for pass and one for shoot. These controls change depending on the context of the action, though. For example, the shoot button unleashes a sliding tackle if you’re not in possession of the ball.
The game engine is surprisingly complicated with various commands unlocking cunning tricks such as feints, turns and other creative play. The slippery and often imprecise nature of the controls can take some getting used to but once you do you’ll find yourself skilfully twisting and turning around the opposition before pulling the trigger on long-distance shots on goal.
As usual, Gameloft’s distribution method means that Real Football 2010 isn’t available for download direct from the Android Market, so you’ll have to visit Gameloft’s site and then wait for an SMS message to arrive that contains the download link.
If you’re looking forward to the World Cup in South Africa then Real Football 2010 is the ideal way to get yourself even more in the mood. It’s packed with content and boasts game play that most people would pay four times as much for.

Meteor Blitz v1.3
Much as we yearn for fresh, exclusive gaming content on Android, bringing over long-forgotten (by the mainstream, at least) iPhone gems has a certain appeal.
Take Galcon, for example. I’d never played the game until I came to review it on the Android platform, so I’m extremely glad of its conversion.
Meteor Blitz fits into this same category. Not that it plays anything likeGalcon - aside from the interstellar warfare theme, the two couldn’t be more different.
Meteor Blitz is a twin-stick shooter – that is, you steer your little fighter through 360 degrees of motion with one virtual analogue stick and shoot in multiple directions with another. Using this mechanism you must blast through loads of floating space rocks and hostile forces.
There’s also a neat gravity beam that lets you pick up rocks and enemies and fire them back like a missile.
Where Meteor Blitz really stands apart from many similar games (though there aren’t many on Android anyway), is that you have a single extremely limited fuel bar that powers both your motion and your weapons. Once you’ve run out, you’re a sitting duck until you release the controls, at which point the bar quickly recharges.
This gives play a completely different feel to most other shooters. You move in bursts, taking breathers in the small pockets of respite you manage to work for yourself (often after a shake-activated smart bomb attack).
And 'work' is the operative word. Meteor Blitz isn’t as easy to just pick up and play as most shooters, and adapting to its unique demands is a relatively protracted process.
This does mark it out as something of an awkward, hardcore experience. Not everyone will have the patience or inclination to stick with it, and the lack of a persistent currency (which allows for weapon upgrades) after the Game Over screen will frustrate those used to seeing everything a game has to offer with little work.
Meteor Blitz isn’t for everyone, then, but its unique approach to shoot-‘em-up action should continue its cult hit status on a whole new platform.

Very often a game will make an appearance on a new platform far too late, its thunder having been well and truly stolen by an opportunistic copycat.
Has Galcon, an innovative RTS that appeared on iPhone two years ago, left it too late to make an impact on Android?
Battle of the planets
It was beaten to the punch long ago, as it happens. Archipelago, which we reviewed last year, is a very similar slice of stripped back strategy. Very good it is, too.
Galcon is better. It’s got more modes - including multiplayer - and it’s better looking.
The game strips RTS conventions back to the core. You start with a collection of planets of various sizes. Most are a neutral grey colour, while the few planets under your control are green, and contain an ever increasing number denoting the forces at your command.
By selecting your planet(s) and then a neutral planet, half of your planet’s forces will embark on a colonising mission. As long as they outnumber the figure on the target planet, it’ll turn to your colour.
The trouble is, there’s an enemy doing the same thing. The goal is to colonise every enemy planet while protecting your own territory.
Universe of possibilities
There are plenty of tactics that emerge from this, like selecting a number of your planets before attacking in order to amass a huge armada. This can take time, depending on distance, so a canny opponent will spot the fleet and reinforce the targeted planet with forces from their other planets.
You won’t get such sharp opposition on the lower difficulty levels, but on the tougher ones – and particularly in multiplayer – you’ll have to be on your toes.
That’s right: Galcon has real-time multiplayer, both locally and across the internet. The setup process remains the same hassle as it was when we reviewed the iPhone version, but once it’s done it’s quite straightforward. More importantly, though, it’s brilliant fun and well worth the effort.
Even if multiplayer’s not your thing, Galcon offers plenty to the solo player. As well as the four difficulty levels, there are five modes of play, each offering a considerably different take on the game. For example, Stealth doesn’t show any fleet movements, so the first you know of an enemy attack is when your troop numbers start ticking down.
It’s this variety on top of an already excellent core system that makesGalcon relevant even two years after its iPhone debut, and arguably the best strategy game on Android.
